Area Information for Bradenton, FL
Originally spelled, “Bradentown,” this area was first discovered in 1539 by the famous Spanish expedition led by Hernando De Sota. Later established in 1842, and finally incorporated in 1903, the town was named after Dr. Joseph Braden whose fort-like home served as a refuge for early settlers during the Seminole Indian attacks. Today, Bradenton is the largest city of the Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and is home to over 50,000 residents.
Bradenton has a colorful and storied past, and many of the original historic sites still stand today. The historical attractions include the Braden Castle Park Historic District, the Iron Block Building, the Old Manatee County Courthouse, and the Peninsular Telephone Company Building, just to name a few.
Residents of Bradenton can enjoy fishing, boat ramps, dog parks, and other outdoor recreational activities at any one of the 10 local parks, including the newest addition, Bradenton Riverwalk, so named because it’s 1.5 mile land stretches between the Green and DeSoto bridges along the banks of the Manatee River. Also of interest is LECOM Field (formerly known as McKechnie Field), spring training home for the Pittsburgh Pirates; River Run Golf Links, where golfers of all ages and experience can enjoy a round of golf on the 18-hole course; and the Manatee Village Historical Park, where residents can take a step back in time and visit restored and replicated buildings from the 1800s. The Village of Arts is a unique neighborhood in the city where zoning allows residents to work out of their homes, and has become the largest arts district on the Gulf Coast. Many of the houses have been remodeled into studios and galleries, restaurants, and shops. Residents and tourists alike enjoy the riverfront destination of Downtown Bradenton where the unique mix of diverse cultures, arts, shopping, and sports offer something for everyone. The Village of Arts is located here, along with a history museum, performing arts center, planetarium, farmers’ markets, and a marina.
